OUR STORY
Created to Support Better Woodland Management
The SLIM Woodlands CIC was established in 2018 with a mission to get more existing woodlands into active management, and managed to a good standard of forestry, for all the many benefits such woodland can provide. To achieve this we set out from day one to support woodland owners, managers and land-based organisations with trusted, independent, practical, professional forestry advice and services.
Based in the Forest of Dean and working across England and Wales, the consultancy has grown from its early work in coppice restoration and traditional woodland skills. We have undertaken nationally-significant woodland research, have shaped national forestry policy and guidance, and delivered essential training to the forestry sector across Great Britain. This is in addition to continue delivering expert forestry solutions for our core client base - private woodland owners, managers and land-based organisations across England and Wales.
SLIM stands for Sustainable Low Impact Management. It reflects our belief that appropriate active management can improve woodland condition, strengthen biodiversity and help woodlands deliver lasting environmental, social and economic benefits.
The SLIM Woodlands CIC is a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee. We have no shareholders, allowing us to remain focused on responsible woodland stewardship, professional standards and positive outcomes for the people and landscapes we support.

FOUNDER & LEAD CONSULTANT
Meet Graham Morgan
BSc • MSc • MICFor • CEnv • MCIEEM
Graham is a Chartered Forester, Chartered Environmentalist, and a registered Ecologist. He has over 24 years professional experience of assessing and advising on the management of land and water assets across Great Britain, including woodlands, forestry operations and complex land-use projects.
His expertise spans practical woodland management; forestry regulations and policy; environmental research and forestry training; biodiversity; climate change; and development planning. This depth and breadth of experience enables him to consider both the immediate needs of a woodland and its wider environmental, regulatory and long-term management context.
These selected areas of experience continue to shape the advice and services of The SLIM Woodlands CIC, and how it sets itself beyond the competition.
Graham is passionate about social equity, environmental responsibility and helping more people connect with actively managed, resilient woodlands.

2019
Practical Restoration of Ancient Woodland
Won and delivered a three year contract with Forestry England undertaking coppice restoration at the National Arboretum Westonbirt. Also spent two years undertaking coppice restoration and thinning works on a number of Natural Resources Wales sites in Monmouthshire in co-operation with Wye Coppice CIC.
2021
Informing New Grant Scheme
Completed one-year contract for the Small Woods Association providing technical input to Defra's ELMS Test and Trial pilot study for small woodlands
2023
Shaping Forestry Policy
Co-authored the joint ICF and CIEEM position paper on bringing more woods into management. Also sat on the stakeholder reference group advising Scottish Forestry on the 5th review of the UK Forestry Standard
2025
Transformative National Woodland Study
Completed delivery of a three-year study on coppice woodlands in England for the National Coppice Federation, supported by the Forestry Commission. Produced landowner guidance, an online interactive coppice map, set up a regional advisor network, and was instrumental in helping introduce the FY6 coppice restoration higher tier grant to Countryside Stewardship
2025
Accredited Forestry Training Provider
Formally approved as a Lantra-accredited Training Provider to deliver our Understanding Woodlands and Woodland Management course
2026
Delivering Essential Forestry Sector Training
In co-operation with Focus On Forestry First, designed and delivered a new programme of essential forestry training to Scottish Woodlands and Natural Resources Wales on environmental awareness for forest managers and new regulatory approach to protected species in forestry
