Understanding Woodlands and Woodland Management

Summary: A Lantra-accredited, two-day course with a focus on small mixed and broadleaf woodlands. This is a theoretical course with ‘hands-on’ practical group activities to apply the knowledge you have learnt. This is more than just an introduction to woodland management; it’s a support package for your woodland journey and you will see woodland through a different set of eyes after this course.

Who Is This For?: Improvers.  An essential course for woodland owners, existing professionals, and those looking for a career start or move into woodland management/forestry.  If you already chainsaw tickets, this gives you the broader theoretical context.  

Requirements: Learners will need to be able/comfortable with spending time outdoors walking around in woodland for several hours at a time in varying weather conditions.  Some existing knowledge of trees and or woodland would be an advantage but is not essential. No dogs allowed.

What Is Covered?:
– the importance of landowners' existing skills, values and resources;
– the history and status of UK woodlands;
– identifying and describing woodland types and British tree species;
– the main threats, constraints and opportunities relating to UK woodland;
– the UK forestry regulatory framework and how it relates to managing woodland;
– assessing the baseline condition of a UK woodland;
– compiling an inventory and setting woodland management plan objectives;
– the economics of owning and managing woodland, including sources of income;
– the future for UK woodland and where to go for further learning and support.
